Highest seeded Canadian in the Open Era at the National Bank Open and playing in his hometown? These upcoming 12 days have the potential to be the biggest of Félix Auger-Aliassime's career so far.

The soon-to-be 26-year-old (his birthday is mid-tournament) is the favourite to extend the National Bank Open's streak of first-time men's champions to six years, but it will not be easy. The man above him in the seedings has been playing his best tennis of late and the men's draw in Montreal is full of experienced players who have secured big titles before.

No matter what, someone who has yet to lift a Masters 1000 trophy in 2026 will do so two weeks from now at IGA Stadium. The National Bank Open Power Rankings breaks down who that could be.

1) Alexander Zverev (+1)

Zverev finally had his crowning moment at Roland-Garros just a few months ago, waiting 12 years since his ATP Tour debut to hoist a Grand Slam trophy. After Carlos Alcaraz withdrew from the French Open and Jannik Sinner failed to make the third round, Zverev truly showed he’s the best outside the “Big Two” and the 2026 National Bank Open will be another chance to prove that.

The German has been one of the most consistent title contenders this year, reaching the semifinals in all but one “Big” (Grand Slam or Masters 1000) event – most recently finishing as runner-up at Wimbledon. On hard courts, the world No. 2 made back-to-back semis during this season’s Sunshine Double – losing to Sinner on each occasion – and forced Alcaraz to play through his longest match at the 2026 Australian Open before losing out to the eventual champion.

Zverev will be the top seed in Canada for the second-straight year as he looks to end another drought by his standards, having gone nearly two years without a Masters 1000 title.

2) Félix Auger-Aliassime (+4)

No Canadian man has come into the Canadian Masters 1000 event in the Open Era as a Top 2-seed. Auger-Aliassime is the first as he heads into his hometown tournament behind only Zverev in both the actual seedings and in these Power Rankings.

The National Bank Open has not been kind to the Canadian No. 1 in recent years. In fact, he has not won a match at his home Masters 1000 event since reaching the quarter-finals in 2022. However, the Auger-Aliassime of the last 12 months has been the best version we have seen of the Montrealer.

Since his second-round exit in Toronto last year, Auger-Aliassime has reached more Masters 1000 and Grand Slam quarter-finals (or better) than he did from January 2023 through July 2025. He has also looked particularly good this spring, being one of just three men (along with Zverev and Flavio Cobolli) to reach at least the quarter-finals of both Roland-Garros and Wimbledon.

3) Ben Shelton (+1)

Shelton’s maiden Masters 1000 title at the 2025 National Bank Open in Toronto was the start of a shiny next 12 months for the Atlanta-native. The American No. 1 arrived in Canada last year with just two ATP trophies and now, he has six to his name ahead of his title defence in Montreal.

Shelton has hoisted a trophy on every surface this season with triumphs in Dallas (hard), Munich (clay), and Stuttgart (grass), but it wouldn’t be a surprise if he wins a second on the concrete during his favourite swing. Even if he doesn’t defend his National Bank Open title, the world No. 8 will be in the mix in Cincinnati, having made back-to-back quarter-finals at the event.

4) Daniil Medvedev (+3)

Medvedev will be thrilled to be back on his favourite surface following a strong first half of the season. The former world No. 1 began 2026 with a trophy in Brisbane then made back-to-back finals with his Dubai title run and runner-up finish in Indian Wells, bringing him back into the Top 10 after nearly a year.

Unfortunately, his Dubai triumph ended Medvedev’s bizarre record of winning his first 22 ATP titles in 22 different cities, which would have been kept alive if he was victorious in Montreal this year.

The former US Open champion is a part of an elite group during the North American hard-court season, joining Andre Agassi and Ivan Lendl as the only players to make four-straight finals across the swing, doing so in 2019. Even seven years later, it’s impossible to count Medvedev out with his history on the concrete.

5) Taylor Fritz (-2)

After a slow start to 2026 on the early hard courts and then almost skipping the clay-court season entirely, Fritz bounced back well on the grass. The former US Open finalist reached the title match in both Stuttgart and Halle before getting to the last eight at Wimbledon.

He should be coming back to Canada, where he reached the final four a year ago, with a lot more confidence after those strong grass results. Fritz is well established as one of the best in the world on hard courts, with an Indian Wells title to his name and runner-up finishes in New York and at the ATP Finals. In a slightly more open field than usual, the Californian should like his chances in Montreal.

That is, as long as he avoids his countrymen. He has lost all three finals he has played this year to fellow Americans.

6) Flavio Cobolli (+4)

2026 has been the year when Flavio Cobolli has established himself as a top player on the tour. After bursting onto the scene last year with a quarter-final run at Roland-Garros and a then-career-best Masters 1000 fourth-round finish in Toronto, the Italian No. 2 has upped his game this season, reaching his maiden 1000-level quarter-final in Madrid followed by his first Grand Slam final at Roland-Garros.

He also reached the quarters at Wimbledon and was a titlist on hard courts in February in Acapulco, showing that he is a threat on all surfaces. He has recorded wins this year over Zverev, Auger-Aliassime, and Alex de Minaur just to name a few. Without his top-ranked countryman in the draw, Cobolli will be the one tasked with maintaining Italy's dominance at the Masters 1000 level in 2026

7) Alex de Minaur (+2)

What wedding gift is better for newlywed de Minaur than a maiden ATP Masters 1000 title at the National Bank Open in Montreal? The Aussie was close to that breakthrough three years ago in Toronto but fell in the final to familiar foe Sinner.

De Minaur has won at least one ATP 500 title ecah year over the past four years, all on hard courts. The world No. 6 won two consecutive titles in Acapulco from 2023-2024 and hoisted the Washington trophy last year. This season, the 27-year-old dispatched indoor hard-court monster Auger-Aliassime in the Rotterdam final to secure the title.

The “Demon” has also made back-to-back US Open quarter-finals, so his crowning moment at a “Big” hard-court event is certainly within reach, and could come as soon as the 2026 National Bank Open. De Minaur still has a title to defend in Washington before arriving in Montreal in search of his first 1000-level trophy.

8) Andrey Rublev (New)

Given how consistent Rublev has been throughout the 2020s, it was a bit surprising to see that his title in Bastad earlier this month was his first in well over a year. The 28-year-old has slipped a little bit over the last couple of years, having not made it past the fourth round of a major since the 2024 Australian Open and failing to advance to a Masters 1000 semifinal in exactly two years.

But that last trip to the final four at a 1000 was at a very relevant venue. The last time the ATP visited Montreal, Rublev went all the way to the final.

Things are pointing in the right direction for him. Not only did Rublev just end that title drought, but he also reached his first Masters 1000 quarter-final of the season at the most recent such event in Rome.

9) Casper Ruud (New)

Few players, if any, were happier to get away from the grass than Ruud. While clay is the Norwegian's preferred surface, he will surely be happier on the hard courts than he was on the lawns. Erling Haaland is good enough on grass for all Norwegian athletes anyway.

While it has been a few years since his best results at the National Bank Open, Ruud has been very consistent throughout his career in Canada. In five main-draw appearances, not only has he never failed to win at least one match, he has never lost before the third round. It has been a while since the three-time major finalist made a deep run off of clay, but Montreal seems as good a place as any for him to bust that slump.

10) Arthur Fils (New)

The Montreal crowd will be ready for Fils’ highly-anticipated return to La Belle Province. The French No. 1 returned to the tour in February of this year following a lengthy back injury and has not missed a beat, reaching at least the quarter-finals in four of five hard-court events.

Fils made his first final in two years in Doha, beating the likes of Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik in straight sets before losing out to Alcaraz in the final. The 22-year-old carried that momentum into the Sunshine Double, where he made the quarters in Indian Wells and semis in Miami. After a month’s rest, Fils began the clay season with a Barcelona title – nearly two years on from hoisting his first ATP 500 trophy at the Japan Open in October 2024.
